upporting Our Fellow Saluki: Apryl Beardsley Gordon’s Fight Against Cancer

Our rugby community has always been built on grit, loyalty, and looking out for one another — and right now, one of our own needs that strength more than ever.

This fall, Apryl Beardsley Gordon, an SIU Rugby alum, received news no one ever wants to hear. Following her September 2 colonoscopy, Apryl was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer. She’s been receiving care at the Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis, where she continues to undergo testing and, as of October 27, began an intensive six-week chemo and radiation treatment.

True to her nature, Apryl has faced this challenge with courage and positivity — even when it meant missing out on the Chicago rugby festivities and time with teammates. Despite the tough road ahead, she remains determined and upbeat, embodying the fighting spirit that defines Saluki Rugby.

In an incredibly difficult twist, Apryl had to share her diagnosis with her family the same day her sister learned her cancer had returned. Yet, even through heartbreak and exhaustion, Apryl continues to show the resilience and heart that make her such a beloved member of our community.

Now it’s our turn to rally behind her.
